BCIB Workforce Operations Representatives (Site Reps) work directly with skilled trades workers on project sites across the province. Their tasks include onboarding, managing incident investigations, and triaging employee issues and requests, among other things. Site Reps are the onsite face and heart of BCIB.

Being part of history is one of the most fulfilling parts of my job. It’s not every day that you can say you’ve contributed to the construction of a subway system or a college.

I came to BCIB with a strong foundation in hospitality, union relations, and experience in the construction industry, complemented by a degree in mechanical engineering. I’m very comfortable working with and advocating for employees in unique and dynamic workplaces.

Now, as a Workforce Operations Representative on the Broadway Subway Project—otherwise known as a Site Rep—I can say with certainty that every day is just that: unique and dynamic.

The Site Representative fulfills a critical role as the initial point of contact for workers onsite. We respond to any situation that workers may present us, all while providing empathetic support. For example, we sometimes receive calls regarding workers who may be struggling with substance abuse. In these situations, we proactively reach out to BCIB’s Occupational Health and Safety Manager, and they effectively assist the worker in getting enrolled in a recovery program. We also facilitate a medical leave for the worker, which allows them to claim Employment Insurance (EI). I’m glad to report that I haven’t had to administer Naloxone to anyone on site but I am proud to know how to do it if it’s ever necessary.

Personally, I love helping people who are newer to the industry. As Site Reps, we conduct regular, consistent follow-ups with apprentices. During these interactions, our main objective is to answer any questions about the collective agreement, offer support, and learn about their project experiences. My goal is to make workers feel supported.

Communication with workers is key in our role. We regularly talk to them about safety concerns, BCIB policies, and questions related to the collective agreement. Employees often express a keen interest in fostering a positive relationship with BCIB to sustain their professional goals across other BCIB projects.

Employees are happy working on BCIB worksites because they feel heard and valued. Everyone is treated equally, regardless of background or experience. Whether it’s an apprentice or a general foreperson, our work policies are the same for everyone. People take pride in contributing to these massive projects.

Not only do I support workers, but I also work with unions and contractors. We collaborate with over 19 unions, gaining insight into labour dynamics. It’s unique to concurrently offer support to both workers and contractors in the skilled trades industry.

BCIB’s goal is to grow the construction workforce here in BC and set a precedent for other Crown corporations to follow. One of our recent highlights is BCIB’s pilot program called “Building it Green”, where I am helping to teach workers about the climate impacts of BC’s construction industry. Another highlight is the Respectful Onsite Initiative (ROI) program, which is truly extraordinary. Before joining BCIB, I had a limited understanding of the experiences and struggles faced by Indigenous peoples, as well as the prevailing disparities in opportunities. After attending the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) training, employees are much more informed and mindful, helping them to respect their co-workers. This transformative experience has noticeably boosted morale and fostered a more inclusive work environment, consequently enhancing employee productivity.

I really love my job. Being part of history is one of the most fulfilling parts of my job. It’s not every day that you can say you’ve contributed to the construction of a subway system or a college.

As a recognized Top Employer in BC, BCIB offers a compelling environment characterized by diversity, ethical standards, and robust leadership. Working here has allowed me to gain valuable insights into the intricacies of union operations, the importance of nurturing professional relationships, and the unique dynamics of construction projects in Canada. Best of all, getting to know and engage with the hardworking employees has been incredibly rewarding.
