Supporting Apprentices

BCIB has a network of partners and projects that can help trainees and apprentices journey out faster, building their careers in their community.

Apprentices in the skilled trades are essential to the development of BC’s workforce. The Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) sets the overall apprenticeship target aligned with Provincial Apprenticeship Ratio Policy, supported by trade specific target ratios for apprentices and journeyperson hours. Based on the guidelines of the CBA as well as the construction schedule, and workplace safety parameters, BCIB sets a project specific target before the procurement of each project.

So what does this mean for contractors? If you’re a contractor on a CBA project, you’ll need to submit employee requests that include allocations for trainees and apprentices. When there are enough journeypersons, a space can be made for someone hoping to earn their qualification. Together, we’ll identify safe and appropriate opportunities for emerging tradespeople. You’ll get to meet and work with new talent and they’ll get closer to their certification.

“What’s cool about being in carpentry is it aligns with my culture without me even knowing. Our community is about to build their Big House which has been a long time coming. … So I will be a part of that build. I get emotional just thinking about it. I would also like to eventually get into helping to build sustainable housing on my reserve back in Port Hardy.”
